Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born in Lynn located in Massachusetts. Her parents were Lithuanian Jewish immigrants Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. Her father, a carnival barker, died at the age of a tiny child, forcing her mother to help support her family through work as waitress or cleaning lady. Ruth went to school in the tenement district of Boston's most deprived. Following only two school years, Ruth left to pursue an acting profession. It was not without challenges. After landing a gig at New York as a model for a detective magazine, she found it difficult to get jobs for stage. The following job she got was the "hat check" woman at a nightclub until she decided to quit and returned to Boston. In Boston, she was able to earn a living in the ushering industry during the in the daytime, while at night she performed with the New England Repertory Company. This was her very first job as an actor. Also, she studied drama. She later graduated from the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
